Ten Reasons to Mountain bike!

It there was one way to sum up the difference between mountain biking and road cycling, it would be what question do you get asked at the end of the day? Road racing “what was your time?”. Mountain bike race “did you enjoy the course?” 🙂

This may not be true for every person and every race, but there is a level of calmness and enjoyment about mountain biking that roadies just don’t have. So here are ten reasons to get the fat wheels out the garage and into the countryside.

1. CONNECT WITH NATURE
Mountain biking gets you out of the office, out of the house and into the silence of nature. You can’t text or check Facebook when you’re on your bike, so it’s just you and the world around you. Hardpack track or single trail the results are the same.

2. SINGULAR FOCUS
Mountain biking puts you in the present moment. It trains your mind to empty itself of the normal chatter that continually flies around and teaches it to be entirely focused on the trail ahead or you end up with your face in the dirt!

3. GREAT HIIT SESSION
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is great to increase fitness fast. The ever-changing track providing quick fast descents then slower longer ascents, easy recovery flats, and technical sharp climbs that require intense bursts of power perfectly replicate what your body goes through in a HIIT training session.

4. SEE AMAZING PLACES
Mountain biking gives you the opportunity to see some of Mother Nature’s best features all around the world, in every type of environment. It allows you to explore deep into forests, way over mountain ranges, down to coastlines and along cliff tops.

5. MEET AWESOME PEOPLE
It is known that mountain biking attracts fun, open, friendly people that are all about going out and having a great ride with friends, having loads of laughs and then enjoying a drink afterwards. Shared stories and wipeouts, rock gardens and endless climbs flow freely.

6. STEP OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE
There is always a new challenge to conquer, whether it be a new skills, new track, new feature or simply pushing your fitness to a higher level. There is always a next level to master.

7. TAKE YOUR PICK!
The mountain biking field has several disciplines, including cross country, trail, enduro, downhill and free riding, with so many variations and mixes of these available.

8. YOU DON’T HAVE TO WEAR LYCRA!
Mountain biking is all about baggie shorts and shirts – no lycra here (unless you are a pro cross-country racer). Mountain biking gear fits comfortably and you don’t need to be a size 8 model to look great in it. You can jump off your bike and into the beer garden, removing your helmet is recommended!

9. FAMILY TIME
Heading out with the family is safe and enjoyable for all. No cars, pedestrians or traffic lights to contend with. No matter your age or ability you can enjoy a day out with the family and get a workout.

10. FITS THE BUDGET
Have an old 26er or a dual suspension 29er no one cares. The hills mountains and trails are open for all to enjoy. If you are at the pointy end of racing, equipment is going to plan a factor, but for most a simple bike, helmet and comfy kit will do.
